BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner Steve Tilston has teamed up with Yorkshire based roots quintet The Durbervilles to bring a magnificent full band sound to selected live dates. The line up adds a tasteful mix of mandolins, electric guitar, accordion, double bass, drums, banjo, 12string, bouzouki and four part harmony to Steve’s acoustic guitar and vocals. “The Durbs really shovel in behind Tilston and bring out the best…all done with aplomb” –Simon Jones: fRoots magazine.
The two acts began the collaboration after Steve invited The Durbervilles to headline at one of his showcase nights at the legendary Hebden Bridge Trades Clubs. The combination of Steve on stage with the band resonated well with all concerned and more dates both secret and public were quickly arranged in the locale, along with a meaningful period of rehearsal. The Durbervilles then got involved in Steve’s recording sessions – the first fruit of this being a version of Love Minus Zero/No Limit which appears on a Bob Dylan 70th Birthday compilation released by Fat Cat Records.
Work on a Steve solo album, produced by band member David Crickmore and a Steve Tilston & The Durbervilles EP then followed. The resultant Steve CD “The Reckoning” not only won the folk award for Best Original Song 2012, but also gained 4 star reviews in 3 National newspapers, countless glossy music magazine coverage and has had enthusiastic plays by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris and Mike Harding. This media enthusiasm led to an appearance on BBC TV’s Later With Jools Holland and BBC 4’s Songwriters Circle. Meanwhile BBC Radio Lancashire broadcasted a Steve Tilston & the Durbervilles concert live from The Clitheroe Grand Theatre.
Material from The Steve Tilston & The Durbervilles “Oxenhope EP” (SPLID CD009), was first unveiled live at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention festival 2011 (See pictures at www.fairportconvention.com), with a March 2012 CD release via Proper. BUY IT NOW at Amazon
Look out for further festival appearances from the combined act in the near future!
“Steve Tilston is an absurdly accomplished singer/songwriter and guitarist who, for years without number, has drawn from the tradition and replenished it with five-star classics “
“ The Durbervilles do not stick to the English Folk route but throw country and Cajun into the mix to make a glorious sound” MAVERICK
